Some days the mind will not be still. One worry calls to another until the whole afternoon is spent rehearsing things that may never come. If that is where you are today, you are in good company — and there is a gentler way to hold your thoughts.
Scripture does not scold the anxious heart. It reaches for it. Here are seven verses to read slowly when your thoughts are loud.
1. When worry crowds everything out
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7
Worry asks you to carry tomorrow alone. This verse invites you to set it down, one request at a time, and let a peace you cannot explain keep watch over your mind.
2. When the weight is too heavy to hold
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
Not some of your care. All of it. He is not too busy for the small things that keep you awake.
3. When your mind runs ahead to tomorrow
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” — Matthew 6:34
You have only been given the grace for today. Tomorrow will come with its own.
4. When you feel alone in it
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” — Isaiah 41:10
5. When you do not know the way forward
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6
6. When the worry follows you to bed
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8
7. When you need to choose what to dwell on
“…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” — Philippians 4:8
